My assignment was to produce a DVD cover and a film poster in the style of Film Noir.
Film Noir is from the era of 1775 when films where black and white and grey in the films Film Noir is also a film genre type. The clothing was formal girls wore dresses and men wore tuxedos and hats and smoked. The landscapes where mafia scenes and it reminds me of the film called Sin City but Sin City has black and white and red and yellow effects. The Film Noir film always has a woman involved and some kind of violence, the lighting is low key light which is formed of three key lights.
My research consists of DVD covers, game covers and film posters . The film covers showed me the layout of what a DVD cover looks like, how the layout is supposed to look and the how the covers are supposed to be arranged. It was easy to find the information that I needed.
The characteristics of Film Noir lighting is low key light for the best suited light.
What I have learnt is that key light, background light and low key lighting are the main lights that you use in Film Noir. The purpose of the key light is to highlight the form and dimension of the subject and the background light is used to illuminate the background area of a set.
My idea came from my research. I wanted to recreate the graphic game poster image into real life mode. My idea for my four images was to take a photograph of a person, a shadow, a knife and a street for my background. I then combined them to make an image. I could not get an image of a knife from home because I was not allowed to take a photograph of that, instead I took a photograph of a different pose of a shadow.
With my photographs I had to take into to account my surroundings and have people coming from and into the location, for example in my street shot there was a lot of people there that day so I had to wait till the time was right for the photo to be taken. I finally was able to take a photograph
and when I was taking my shots in college I had to find the right time to take the camera shot while people were out of sight, so they could not get in the way of my camera shots or trip up on the red head light because the wire was a trip hazard. I also had to take into account the weather conditions for my background shot. My model was good, she was very cooperative. The equipment was good, I hired out the camera and the red head light to use to take the photographs and to light up the subject that I was working on.
I was really pleased with my photographs.
My contact sheet was pretty basic, it showed the photographs name and what time I took it.
Contact sheets are pretty important because it shows the photographs that I have taken and it shows how many I have taken and what effects I have used to get the photographs.
In my editing process I used quick tool, magic tool, brush tool and control t to re size the images, text tool to edit my work to make a poster and dvd cover.
i have chose my four favorite images to fuse together to make my dvd cover and poster
• A4 portrait poster and DVD artwork.
What I would do differently next time: I would try to be more organised for the lesson, use the camera more efficiently and learn more of the terminology.
In my opinion my final images do meet the requirement of the design brief, because what I spoke about in my design brief, I have kept to and now my final image looks like my design brief.

1.Look at the following four photographs and describe the rules of composition they adhere to and explain the message (meaning/what are they about) behind the images.
The theme is the UK because the gray scale picture is how the UK used to be and the tower bridge is a land mark for Britain and there are British flags.
This is a landscape shot and the tower bridge is symmetrical. |
Cropped image, small aperture did not use a wide aperture. |
Rule of thirds, wide aperture and shallow depth of field. |
Black and white photograph. I think this was taken in the 50s because of the decor and the clothing on the people. This is a crop shot. |

a) F16 b) F1.8 c) F8 d) F4
F1.8, F4, F8 and F16

contact sheets
This is my contact sheet for my person for my montage. I have chosen P1110608.JPG because I like the shadow and the lighting on her face and the fact that I can see more of her face. |
This contact sheet is for my shadow. |
This contact sheet is for my shadow as well. I have chosen P1110621.JPG because the pose is good and the focus. I did not chose the others because there was not the right focus and right pose. |
This contact sheet is for my street. I have chosen HNI_0065.JPG because its straight path and it is more in focus. I took these photographs on my 3ds because I could not take out a camera. |
